Pantyhose rip so easily because the yarn is fine and the fabric is a chain of loops. A nail or a ring breaks one loop, and the loops below it let go one after another. That column of loose loops is a run. The finer the yarn, the less it takes to start one. Sheer pantyhose made for men are knit the same way, so the answer to why do pantyhose rip so easily holds for any pair, and the fix has two parts. For every day, our 10D, a 10 denier knit that resists runs. The finest pairs need a careful hand instead.

Why do pantyhose rip so easily?

A knit fabric is one long yarn looped through itself, row after row. Each loop hangs on the loop above it. Break one and the chain beneath it has nothing to hold, so it unravels in a straight line down the leg. That's a run. A snag is the step before: something catches a loop and pulls it out of the fabric without breaking it.

What breaks a loop is a fingernail, the edge of a ring, the clasp of a watch, a rough heel, or a hard pull from the waistband while the leg is only half on. Putting a pair on is when all of those are in play at once.

Denier, needle count and the trade-off

Two numbers describe a sheer knit. Denier is the weight of the yarn: the lower the number, the lighter the yarn. Needle count is the number of knitting needles.

The yarn weight sets up a plain trade-off. A lighter yarn gives a lighter fabric and a loop that breaks with less force. A thicker yarn takes more to break. No sheer knit gets both.

The 10D: the pair that resists runs

Our 10D Sheer Tights sit at the stronger end of that trade-off. The 10D is knit at 10 denier on 1012 needles, woven with Lycra, and it resists runs. Among our sheer pairs, the 10D is the stretchiest and most durable fabric we make. It has a soft sheen up close, a high rise that sits above the navel, and a soft, stretchy elastic waistband. It comes in Black and Beige and fits men from 5'7" to 6'2" (170 to 188 cm) and 145 to 210 lbs (65 to 95 kg). Inside that range, the 10D is our usual first recommendation.

The 10D resists runs, but it can still run. A nail pushed through a loop will still break it. The difference is that the 10D takes more to start one.

The 10D Sheer Dress Sock 2-Pack is a below-the-knee dress sock knit at 10 denier on 1012 needles, nylon with Lycra spandex, with a reinforced toe. The 10D sock resists runs too. Two pairs to a box, in Black, Standard size.

The 1D asks for a careful hand

Our 1D Seamless Sheer Tights sit at the other end of the trade-off. The 1D is knit at 1 denier on 512 needles and is the lightest pair we make, with a matte finish, a mid rise around the navel and a soft, stretchy elastic waistband. It comes in Black and Sand. The 1D is extremely delicate, so handle it with care: trimmed nails, or the gloves, every time you put it on.

The sheer tights by the numbers

Three of our sheer tights, with the yarn weight and needle count of each.

Pair Denier Needle count Finish
10D Sheer Tights 10 1012 Woven with Lycra, soft sheen, resists runs
3D Seamless Sheer Tight 3 640, high-density Smoothest pair we make
1D Seamless Sheer Tights 1 512 Matte, the lightest pair we make

The 10D tights and the 10D dress sock are the pairs woven with Lycra, and the pairs that resist runs.

Putting a pair on without starting a run

This is where hands and nails meet the knit, so slow this part down.

  1. Trim your nails.
  2. Take off rings and your watch.
  3. Put on the disposable gloves from the box.
  4. Sit down and gather one leg of the fabric down to the toe.
  5. Slide your foot in and roll the leg up gradually. Don't pull from the waist.
  6. Do the other leg the same way.

Every NYLO order includes those gloves, so nails and rough skin don't catch the knit. Wear them every time you put a pair on.

Common questions about runs

Are there sheer tights that don't rip?

Not in a knit this fine. The nearest thing we make is the 10D, which resists runs. Trimmed nails and the gloves do the rest.

How should I wash sheer tights?

By hand in cold water, without bleach. Let them air dry away from heat, and keep them out of the dryer.

Can I return a pair that ran?

Once a pair has been opened, tried on or worn, it's final sale for hygiene. Unopened items in their original sealed packaging can be returned within 14 days of delivery. Email support@nylo.us first, and see our refund policy. A pair that arrives defective, damaged or wrong is a different case: email support@nylo.us within 7 days of delivery with your order number and a clear photo next to the packaging.
