What makes a dress sock sheer
A sheer sock is knit from yarn fine enough for the leg to show through. Two numbers describe that knit. Denier is the weight of the yarn: the lower the number, the finer the thread. Needle count is how many needles knit it, and more needles pack the stitches closer for a denser fabric.
Next to a ribbed cotton dress sock, a sheer one is the dressier choice. The knit is far thinner, so it sits flat inside a close-cut leather shoe instead of bunching at the ankle the way a thick ribbed sock can.
1D or 10D: choosing your pair
Our two socks take those numbers in opposite directions. The 1D pairs the finer yarn with fewer needles, so it's the lighter, more delicate sock. The 10D pairs a heavier nylon and LYCRA spandex with nearly twice the needles, so it's the tougher one. Both are black and come in Standard size, and our size guide covers every fit we make.

Shoes that work
A tuxedo with black patent shoes is about as natural a setting as a sheer black sock gets. For everything short of black tie, wear them with leather dress shoes. Oxfords, derbies and monk straps in polished black are the safest start: the shoe covers the top of the foot, so only the gap between shoe and hem is in view. Dark brown leather works too, with navy or charcoal trousers.
Loafers are cut lower over the instep than a lace-up, so the sock shows even when you're standing. With a loafer, the sock is on view all day, not only when you sit.
Leave sneakers to ordinary socks. A sheer sock belongs with leather. Next to a sneaker it just looks thin.
Trousers, length and color
Our socks reach below the knee, the length a dress sock should be. Cross your legs and the trouser rides up the calf; a shorter sock leaves bare skin above it. Ours cover that gap.
Trousers with little or no break (the fold that forms where the hem rests on the shoe) suit a sheer sock best, since they let some of it show as you walk. Cloth pooling over the shoe hides it.

Putting them on
Sheer knit can snag, so get ready first:
- Trim your nails and take off your rings.
- Put on the disposable gloves that come in every NYLO order, so nails and rough skin don't catch the knit.
- Gather the sock down to the toe with both hands, set your toes in, and draw it over the heel.
- Work it up the calf a little at a time instead of pulling from the top, then settle it below the knee.
Common questions
Do men's sheer dress socks show under trousers?
Standing in lace-ups, very little: the trouser covers most of the sock. In loafers some of it shows all day. Sit down and the leg shows through the knit.
How do I wash them?
By hand in cold water, without bleach. Let them air dry away from heat, and keep them out of the dryer.
How do they arrive, and can I send them back?
